Trap Door Beast

Feeding habit: Carnivore.
Locations: From the Rust Mountains to the Tin river and maybe beyond. They have been found as far south as Guild city but are easy prey in farming lands.
Size: Small, 450 to 900mm, about that of a dog.

Characteristics: Large paws and enlarged jaws, small rear quarters. A digger. They burrow into firm soil and stay there feeding on the unwary. Typically they scrape away a pipe or pit leaving a few centimeters of upper non-load bearing surface in place. A larger creature comes by, steps onto the weakened ground and plunges down usually breaking a leg. At this point the trap door beast attacks, biting off as much flesh or maybe the whole limb and retreating deeper into the lair. A whole pack may be involved in the attack, in which case the fallen animal will usually be overwhelmed. Humans can usually fight them off with minimal weaponry, armor or magical abilities but many still fall prey to these beasts every year.
