Pitfall Island was once the great fortress of the Ice Witch of the north who sought to freeze the world and enslave all the world under her power. Thinking herself a Goddess she began to create all sorts of horrific creatures on her island to do her bidding and to replace the inhabitants of the world with her own creations.
She was eventually defeated by vast combined forces of humans and gnomes over a thousand years ago. Her creations have lived on. Fort Fear was constructed to keep these creations on Pitfall Island. It has always been guarded by loyal humans and gnomes who ensure the safety of thousands of souls by enforcing the protections spells and killing any creatures that escape this forlorn island.
Fort Fear is a gloomy set of towers and castles on the edge of the tundra and taiga of the Hard Tundra Plains. Many humans there go crazy with depression in a decade or less and so many criminals are sent there as punishment. Even pirates steer clear of the grey and worthless waters off these northern shores.
